Topic: Reversing magnesium depletion: Implications for heart health by Aileen Burford-Mason, PhD

Conference:Re-examining the Oath - Toronto, ON - September 9-11, 2016

Lecture Abstract:
Many commonly used medications are known to deplete magnesium. This has implications for cardiovascular health, since magnesium has a central role to play in regulating heart function. Problems with identifying magnesium deficiency from blood tests alone, functional biomarkers for detecting inadequate magnesium tissue stores in patients, and the effective use of magnesium supplements to ameliorate drug depletion and thus improve heart health will be discussed.

Learning Objective 1: Attendees will explore the evidence for links between low dietary intakes of magnesium and cardiovascular disease.

Learning Objective 2: Attendees will learn how commonly prescribed medications increase the risk of cardiovascular disease through magnesium depletion.

Learning Objective 3: Attendees will understand the limitations of laboratory tests for magnesium and explore the use of alternative methods for assessing patientsí magnesium status.

Learning Objective 4: Attendees will learn how to offset drug depletion and ameliorate potential side effects by supplementing with magnesium
